I started Worldly Girl Guide to help my audience appreciate the diversity in our world. This can be done in so many ways – learning about cultures through food, travel, movies and books, activities for children, etc. – as long as you have an open mind. I also want to find opportunities to give back to the world through community service, career choice, and lifestyle.
1. Recommend and Review Places I’ve Visited to Encourage Travel and Exploration of Cultures.
I truly believe that the best way to learn about the world and yourself is to GO OUT and EXPLORE it. There is no better teacher than travel. Not only do you learn in the process of visiting a new place, but you get to experience life and learn about other people that are different from you. It opens up your mind and inspires us.
I appreciate growing up in the “melting pot” of the United States of America. But there are times that I wanted to fit in and where I grew up, that meant distancing myself to the culture that my parents came from. Now that I have my own kids, I want them to learn about and get connected to the culture they came from. I want them to be global citizens, like I strive to be.
2. Provide Ways to Learn About Cultures at Home Through Food and Activities
Although I wish I could travel ALL the time, it’s typically not feasible for a family between jobs and limited vacation days, school schedule, and the comfort of having a routine at home. Other limitations of constant travel are money, time, and a global pandemic that’s affecting the industry at the moment.
However, there are still ways to travel from your hometown! Whether it’s taking a daytrip or roadtrip to a new place in your home state, going for a visit to a museum to explore different cultures, having a country/cultural theme night at home, exploring different restaurants in your city, or hanging out with friends from different backgrounds, there are myriad ways that you can explore the wonderful cultures and foods of this world from your own home!
3. Recommend ways that you and your family can give back to the community
Families are busy these days, and it’s hard to find the time and energy to give back. I am also trying to find ways to give back outside of my job at a non-profit organization.
This guide will help you come up with easy ways to volunteer, donate, or do things that will contribute to the community and to the world. There are small things that families can do that can make a big difference to other families that may not be as fortunate.
4. I Want to Have a Community of people who also like to travel with purpose, be open to other cultures.
In this day and age, it’s not easy to meet people in real life that have similar interests as you. As the more and more people around the world get on the internet and join social media, it has become easier to find an online community of people with similar interests as you.
I am hoping to build a community of Worldly Girls – a group that understands that there is a bigger world out there that is waiting for us to explore, appreciate, and take care of. We can do it together with the power of numbers!
5. I Want to Spread the Message of Building Unity through Diversity.
in the United States, we have experienced a rough patch in the past few years. Past presidential administrations have created more division over our differences than ever before. It has become okay to act and be racist and think that a group of people with similar backgrounds are superior than others.
Having experienced discrimination in my life over my background, I am a fierce proponent of racial equity, diversity, and equal rights for all. Now more than ever, it’s important for our kids to learn these lessons. It takes effort to be an anti-racist and to work toward a more unified humanity that can embrace our differences rather than creating a chasm between each other in this world.
Conclusion
These five points are not only a reminder to myself about the goals of this blog, but also to let my readers know if this resonates with them. If so, please leave a comment or sign up for my e-mail updates!
